The notebook project began as a way of carrying my studio around with me. Drawing on small, discreet, transportable units not only facilitates working in all types of environments, transcending the studio/non studio disconnect, but also narrows and directs my focus. The linear nature of the accordion-style notebooks forces the work to unfold in an ever-expanding temporal field of freely associated forms. I don’t do canvases, I don’t do individual drawings, my work is about the unfolding of a continuous, spontaneous drawing that avoids any overriding compositional themes. The essence of the project is the sustained effort and how, through the repetition of marks, I am able to compress experience and convey the passage of time.
