In this digital photo print series, the randomness stems from the capture of graffiti caught passing by in the streets of New York – serendipity at play. The artist’s eye sees things that most passerby would not, phantasmagorical shapes left to the imagination of the viewer. The metal grid has turned into line, now the support of what he calls accidental drawings.
My work is anchored in decades of abstract drawing practice, however, over the past 10 years, I’ve focused my energy on photographing the urban environment, walking through neighbourhoods in search of revealing details that express the erosion of the city. In it, I see seductive forms, I capture patterns, and read abstractions that my hand used to create from scratch. In both media (drawing and photography) I do leave a trace, I mark my space. And in this process, I document the marks others have left behind. Decay, and despair, invisible to most urban dwellers. I let images emerge accidentally from multiple layers of urban scars. My intent is to depict a personal vision of hell.
